[Audio script]

The good thing about being a travel journalist is that if you are successful you get paid to go on a holiday. It is said that if you find out what you love to do, you never have to work again! But more often than not, it is a lot of hard work, long journeys... not always comfortable, a disrupted body clock, strangenot always palatable food, long weeks away from family, usually not enough money.

Why do people do it then? Because it is fun! Or... because they have to. They are seekers, trying to understand the truth of the human condition. As Aldous Huxley once said, "to travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries." What we discover about a place is generally different from what we assume about it.

To present a successful travelogue one needs to have a love for life, an eye for the unusual, a taste for adventure, and a thirst for the unknown. The presenter also needs to make regular notes about people, snatches of conversation, small details which can make the experience come alive for viewers. This is a major difference between a traveller and a tourist. A tourist just sees whatever is the highlight of the destination, but a traveller seeks to explore the unknown, to find the underlying motivations...

Small wonder then that travel shows are among the most popular ones on TV. The viewer can see the world from his favourite couch, sample exotic food, vicariously of course, and it is all free.
